President's Message:

February 10, 2020

     

The ALATA Executive Council(EC) met face-to-face in Birmingham on January 19th. During this meeting, we discussed the plan for the upcoming year to accomplish our goals. We discussed the 2020 ALATA Annual Clinical Symposia & Members’ Meeting, the upcoming legislative session and our new bill, as well as other events and opportunities we are planning. I left that meeting feeling motivated and invigorated about the future of our association. Many of these topics will be highlighted and explained in more detail in this month’s A-blast.

            I would like to personal thank all of those that nominated and those that are on the ballot for the current ALATA Special Election. Those nominees and their bios can be found below. Please read through and consider voting in the upcoming election. Voting for the special election will be Monday, February 10th and will close Monday, February 24th and will be conducted via the ALATA website (alathletictrainers.org). If you are an eligible voter (as set forth in Article I Section 1.3 of these bylaws), please consider voting in this election.

            We as an EC look forward to all this is coming for our association and profession this upcoming year. We hope to see you soon to share in this excitement! Please reach out with any questions you might have.

The nominees and their biographies for At-Large 3 are below.​

Christina "Tina" Moya

My name is Christina “Tina” Moya I am an Athletic Trainer at Florence High school, with North Alabama Bone and Joint Clinic in Florence, Alabama. Prior to Florence High School, I served as an Athletic Trainer at Lawrence County High School and R.A. Hubbard High School with, Encore Rehabilitation during the 2018-2019 academic year. I am a native of Albuquerque, New Mexico and received my bachelor's degree in Athletic Training from the University of New Mexico in 2009. After graduation, I was the Head Athletic Trainer and Health instructor at Valencia High School in Los Luna, New Mexico, from 2010-2012.

In 2012, I started my master’s degree at the University of West Florida (UWF).  Working as a Graduate Assistant with the men’s and women’s cross-country teams and softball. I received my master's degree in Exercise Science from UWF in 2014.  After graduation, I was an Assistant Athletic Trainer at Arkansas Tech from 2014-2015.  In 2015, I accepted a job as an Assistant Athletic Trainer at the University of the Ozarks (U of O) and stayed for 3 years until moving to Alabama.  When I am not working I love getting out doors hiking, kayaking and supporting my boyfriend at marathon and cross country races.  

Bryce Ciancio

 

Bryce Ciancio, M.Ed, LAT, ATC received his B.S. in Athletic Training from Lenoir-Rhyne College in Hickory, NC in 2006. After receiving his degree, he obtained a Kenny Howard Athletic Training Fellowship to attend Auburn University.  He pursued his M. Ed in Kinesiology/Biomechanics while serving as a graduate assistant athletic trainer.  He covered water polo, rugby, and Lacrosse.  He graduated with his M. Ed in Kinesiology/Biomechanics from Auburn University. Bryce was named the Head Athletic Trainer at Central High School in Phenix City in 2008.  During his 12 year tenure at Central, Bryce has taught Health, Strength and Conditioning, Sports Medicine, PE, and Introduction to Health Care while providing medical care for the student athletes and staff of the Phenix City Schools. He has served as the strength and performance coach for Central over the last three years also.  He has coordinated CPR training for the school districts coaches, across all sports, for the last 8 years while maintain BLS Instructor certification in American Red Cross and American Heart Association. Bryce won the Sports Vision Chattahoochee Valley Athletic Trainer of the Year award for 2019. Bryce, his wife Kristin, and their three kids, Jack, Kaylea, and Elsa reside in Phenix City.

Allyn Abadie

Allyn Abadie hails from sunny Southern California and is in her second year as an Athletic Trainer at The University of Alabama at Birmingham. She is contracted through the Student Affairs Division to cover Recreation and Club Athletics and work as a Physician’s Extender in the Student Health Department. Along with her responsibilities as an Athletic Trainer for the University, she is also a Doctoral Student pursuing research in Nutrition Sciences. Previously, Allyn attended The University of Alabama for her MA in Health Studies while working as a Graduate Assistant in their Recreation and Club Athletics. She was involved in the Clinical Skills portion of the Undergraduate ATEP as a preceptor.   Allyn received her B.S. in Athletic Training and a minor in Leadership from Nova Southeastern University, in Fort Lauderdale, FL. During her time there, she was an Athletic Training student, a student-athlete, and was on the executive board of four organizations holding two presidential positions.

Alicia Jay

Alicia Jay MAT, LAT, ATC, CEASII graduated with her Bachelor of Science degree in athletic training from The University of West Alabama in 2011 and with her Master’s in the Art of Teaching in 2013. She began her athletic training career at Alabama State University where she was an intern in 2011 and then quickly promoted to assistant athletic trainer. In 2014 she began working in the industrial setting as well as high school outreach. For the past six years she has worked with manufacturing, delivery, and service companies throughout Alabama. In 2015 she completed her ergonomic assessment specialist certification. She currently serves on the state’s industrial, clinical and military committee. Alicia is passionate about helping others learn the value of an athletic trainer in all types of settings.

Please consider the approaching bios in your upcoming vote. Voting for the special election will be Monday, February 10th and will close Monday, February 24th and will be conducted via the ALATA website (alathletictrainers.org). A member entitled to vote on ALATA affairs, as set forth in Article I Section 1.3 of these bylaws, may vote an eligible member for this position.

We are excited to announce that this year’s state meeting will tentatively provide 9.25 Category A CEUs and 7.25 EBP CEUs! We will also be offering an additional EBP CEU opportunity on Sunday, May 24th for an additional fee. This additional opportunity will be worth 4 EBP CEUs, which will bring up your awarded EBPs to 11.25 pending full completion of each opportunity. More information on this additional event can be found below and on the alathletictrainers.com website.

Additional information specific to the course will be provided prior to registration opening. This is a hands-on workshop and space is limited. Spots for this workshop will be first come, first served so be sure you sign up quickly as we expect this event to fill up fast.

SAVE THE DATE: We will be “Hitting the Hill” Wednesday, February 19th to meet with selected legislators. The goal of this event will be to educate those legislators on our profession and provide more information of what our mission with our new bill. We are asking as many Athletic Trainers and athletic training supporters within the state of Alabama as possible to attend this event. More specific information about the event will be provided soon.
