National Provider Identifier Number

An NPI is a unique 10-digit identification number used in standard health care transactions. It is issued to health care professionals and covered entities that transmit standard HIPAA electronic transactions. The NPI fulfills a requirement of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA). It also replaces all provider identifier numbers assigned by payers and is used by health care professionals. Covered entities under HIPPA are required by regulation to use NPIs to identify health care providers in HIPPA standard transactions.

This allows an Athletic Trainer or Athletic Training Student to be recognized as health care professionals. It also bridges the gap between Athletic Trainers and other health care professionals creating a connection. Having an NPI number is also important for students as one day they will become health care professionals, therefore the NPI number is a great way to get involved and show leadership.
