
Drew Ferguson Biography
Robert "Drew" Ferguson's distinguished career in sports medicine began at the Sports Medicine Institute of Alabama, now known as Children's Sports Medicine, where he served as Co-founder and later as Director for over 30 years. Drew then took on the role of Director of Development for UAB Sports & Exercise Medicine where he showcased a profound dedication to athlete health and safety. Drew possessed an extensive educational background and has served in notable positions such as: Head Athletic Trainer for UAB Athletics, USOC Track and Field Athletic Trainer for the 1996 Olympic Games, Medical Director for the 2017 U.S. Senior Games and the 2017 Maccabi Games, Secretary and Treasurer for the Alabama State Board of Athletic Trainers ('94-95), Chair of Alabama State Board of Athletic Trainers ('95-08), Member of Medical Advisory Board for the Alabama High School Athletic Association ('20-Present), Chair of the Public Policy Committee of the Alabama Concussion Task Force ('20-Present) and CEO of Coach Safely Foundation.

Secondary to these accolades, Drew Ferguson was a pivotal figure in advancing sports medicine practices and advocating for athletic trainers through legislative efforts. His efforts have been recognized by his induction into the Alabama Athletic Trainers’ Association Hall of Fame in 2002, Alabama Sports Hall of Fame in 2023 and soon to be Alabama High School Athletic Association Hall of Fame in March 2025. Motivated by a lifelong commitment to education and the well-being of athletes, Drew started a Sports Medicine Lecture Series, hosted by UAB Sports & Exercise Medicine, to ensure the future growth of sports medicine. His initiatives reflected his desire to share knowledge and inspire the next generation of healthcare professionals, athletic trainers, and community members. These efforts have cemented his legacy as a sports medicine leader in Alabama.
